GPS Introduction
The Global Positioning System (GPS) consists of three segments: the space segment, the control segment, and the user segment.
The control segment tracks each satellite and periodically uploads to the satellite its prediction of future satellite positions and satellite clock time corrections. These predictions are then continuously transmitted by the satellite to the user as a part of the navigation message.
The space segment consists of 24 satellites, each of which continuously transmits a ranging signal that includes the navigation message stating current position and time correction.
The user receiver tracks the ranging signals of selected satellites and calculates three-dimensional position and local time.
GPS Applications
Military use of GPS Technology was primarily evident in its use on precision weapon delivery. In Iraq War, The Desert Storm campaign demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of GPS Technology. The tactical commanders were able to identify precise troops and vehicle position and movement in a common coordinate frame.
The applications of the GPS for the civilian community are extensive. Initially the GPS was used for accurate time transfer and survey. Later uses broaden into marine, air, land, and even space. Here are some civil applications of GPS:
1) Air navigation
Helicopter operations
Collision avoidance
Air Traffic Control
Asset Tracking & Reporting: Air Cargo Tracking
2) Land navigation
Vehicle monitoring and tracking: Fleet Tracking
Schedule improvement
Minimal routing
Law Enforcement Activities: Suspect Tracking
Driver Navigation System
3) Marine navigation
Oceanic: Marine vessel navigation
Coastal
Inland waterways
4) Static positioning and timing
Offshore resource exploration
Hydrographic surveying
Land surveying
Geographical information systems
5) Search and Rescue
Position reporting and monitoring: Personal Tracking (Child, Elderly alzhemer's patients and special needs adults)
Coordinated search
Collision avoidance
